Grayson's blood labs came back ok. He then had his urine checked on Thursday to see how his sodium levels were. That came back showing he is sodium depleted, which can lead to dehydration and poor growth among other things. So now we have to start giving him sodium supplements several times a day. All of this becomes a delicate balancing act.
It started with him aspirating his food, so cereal was added to his formula to thicken it. Shortly after, he started "dumping out" with a significant increase in stool output, which leads to sodium depletion and dehydration in people with ostomies. So we add cereal to thicken to help with aspirating, but then that adds significant calories which will make him get too heavy and he gets full and can't consume enough fluids to keep up with the significant output. So then, he becomes sodium depleted and needs sodium supplementation. This is another balancing act to get his sodium levels up, but can be dangerous because too much can lead to seizures and other problems.
It has become quite challenging trying to balance all of this and get Grayson in the right happy place. I am really fortunate that I have been getting some help and assistance from some of the personnel at Cincinnati Children's Colorectal Center. They have been helpful and it's wonderful that they are helping even though Grayson isnt a patient of theirs yet. Hopefully, we can get Grayson up there soon to meet that expert team.
