Today wasn't as good. We called first thing in the morning to see how Grayson was doing and we found out both of his IVs were out (he had an IV in each foot). They could have stopped working because the veins couldn't handle it anymore or for other reasons. They stuck him 9 times trying to get new IVs in place and had no luck. They tried to get IVs in his hands, arms, feet, and head. They put a feeding tube in him to try and get him fluids now that he didn't have an IV. This is proving to be difficult as his GI track is not ready to process the fluid. This also meant he couldn't get any morphine today for his pain. Once we got to the hospital, Scott started talking to many of our friends (various hospital staff we've come to know well) and found out who some of the best are at putting difficult IVs in so we had one of the nurses try and after two attempts, no luck. The second nurse was able to get an IV on the second attempt, so finally on the 13th attempt we were able to get an IV in, which will prevent Grayson from getting dehydrated.
Unfortunately, with the difficulty of getting IVs in Grayson and being able to maintain them we may have to put a central line in him tomorrow. Which involves another trip to the operating room and being put under with anesthesia again. The central line is an IV that goes directly into the chest in a larger vein closer to the heart and then gets stitched into place in the chest.
Hopefully tomorrow brings a better day.
This is such a nightmare - you couldn't possibly make this up. He looks so fragile and helpless. You have to be persistent with his care giving and you have been. Thank God Grayson has you and VAL watching over him. He is so precious - love you all.
ReplyDeleteWe are praying for him every day!!!
ReplyDeleteLots of love to all of you
